Mine | Seattle Children's Photographer

I was having one of those days. It was one of those days where I was just worn thin. My 4 1/2 year old son, Reid, seems to ask about 300 questions a day and doesn't quite understand the beauty of silence. I do my best to be patient with him and to answer his questions because I want him to feel respected enough to receive an answer. That being said, I can't help but feel pressed to my limit from time to time. So, instead of letting the stress get to me I decided to take him into his newly organized room to take some photos. We moved into our Queen Anne home in early October and yet it has taken me this long to get it fully unpacked and organized. Oops. His queen size bed is up against a window and there is another window flanking the westward facing wall. The light is one of the reasons that I fell in love with his home (it's technically an apartment - the original house is over 4000 sqft, built in 1911, and has been turned into 3 separate units. We occupy the 2nd floor). Despite the fact that it's cold and windy in Seattle today we had some beautiful sunlight streaming into his room. Children are so filled with personality. I don't often photograph children alone because most people that hire me want a family photo session, but I do love working one on one with a child to capture their intricacies. Yes, Reid can be a handful and yes, today was a hard day, but now I have these photos to look back on because I know that someday I will miss his 4 1/2 year old personality, energy, and innocence. Quirks and all.

And our closing photo. Tell us how you really feel about taking photos, Reid ;)

Elena and I have been trying to coordinate their session for weeks. One time I was sick, then the weather was nasty, etc etc. We finally had a clear weekend but of course the temperatures were going to be well below freezing. We decided to embrace that because although I've never shot in 28 degree weather, I knew how beautiful the Seattle landscape would be all covered in frost. Elena bundled up her kiddos and away we went! The kids were troopers and everyone was wiping their dripping noses and attempting to keep their fingers warm. I had a moment of panic thinking that my lens was fogging up but it was actually just my warm breath on my LCD screen. Ah yes, I'm a total cold weather amateur (I owned one coat before moving to Seattle). Elena is also a talented Seattle photographer and when I told her what type of location I wanted for her session, she suggested Discovery Park which is just a few miles from my home in Queen Anne. Discovery Park was beautiful on a sunny winter morning and I can't wait to see it in the spring and summer! By the end of our session the kids were ready to get in the warm car and head off for breakfast and hot chocolate which they more than deserved!

It was a chilly December afternoon when I met these great people for their family photos. Just like my husband and I, they had recently moved to Seattle because of a job at Amazon. It seems that everyone we meet in Seattle is here either working for Amazon, Microsoft, Starbucks, Nordstrom, Boeing, or the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation! While I'm not completely used to the Seattle "gloom", there is beauty here that you just don't find in Southern California. The leaves change color and the lush green landscape follows you wherever you go. It's really beautiful.
